The Spirit of the “V” for Victory Campaign

This press photo (ACME) dated August 2, 1941, embodies the spirit of the Allies’ V for Victory campaign, though actually the associated caption reads: “‘V’ is for Valor.” In this case, they are referring to the spirit and determination of “Granny” Alice Taylor, 81, who is seen here chalking a “V” on her home in a bomb-battered section of London. Following this show of defiance to the Axis powers, she retired with 7 of her family to their Anderson shelter, where “she sat out a sharp air raid by German planes which came over after 11 weeks’ respite.” The really impressive part of this story is that this was the one remaining wall of her home still standing.
