On December 17, 1944, 84 American soldiers were massacred near the town of Malmedy, Belgium.  On December 17th we honor the 84 soldiers who perished and a local survivor, Harold Billow. Harold Billow paid a yearly tribute to his fallen comrades.  Billows was one of the very few soldiers to escape the close-range machine-gun fire that day that ended so many young lives. Sadly, Harold passed away in 2022 and can no longer place each of the 84 flags in the front yard of his home in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania representing the number of young lives lost. We at WWII American Experience will carry on Harold’s touching tribute and keep the stories of the brave young men alive. Please visit us and the 84 flags this December 17th-December 24th to learn more about this event during The Battle of the Bulge.
